Caitlin's Travel Bug: First placed in Singing Birds 2 in New York and then flew all the way to Ohio and after enjoying the "grand views" of that beautiful state, she hopped over to West Virginia, flew through Kentucky, and then decided to head north to winter in Connecticut. When winter ended, Caitlin traveled to the warmer states of Arizona and Texas, then back north to Alaska. She briefly flew to Montana before returning to Alaska. Caitlin is proud to hold the record of traveling the farthest at just over 10,500 miles.

My name is Caitlin and I usually go geocaching with my brother, Caleb. We like the more challenging caches and one such cache was the one near the fire lookout cabin at the top of Park Butte on Mount Baker. The hike was gorgeous with only two river crossings. The first had a well-built bridge and though the bridge was missing over the second river (washed away during the winter snow flows), there was a log across the river which made crossing easy without getting wet feet.

The hike was long, almost 9 miles round trip with a few side trips added in. The trail starts out as a rocky trail through a meadow, then after the creek crossings, the trail climbs steeply to a plateau just below the snow line. This area is beautiful with wild flowers and great views of Mt. Baker. The trail then continues relatively flat for a while before climbing again. You can see the lookout way up on the peak, but the trail goes around the backside of a hill before climbing up the mountain to the fire lookout on the top of Park Butte.

You can campout in the cabin and we met several people coming up with camping gear. There is also a primitive campsite not far from the lookout cabin.

We've heard that it is common to see bears on this hike--usually in September.
